Thoughts on: The Evolution of Our Love (2018)

Since Zhang Ruo Yun recently got married and all the photos of the wedding are adorable, I was browsing his filmography to see if I’d see him in anything and came across last year’s The Evolution of Our Love from last year.

The Evolution of Our Love is the Chinese version of the Taiwanese drama In Time With You (2011) starring Ariel Lin and Chen Bolin. I watched In Time With You when it came out and have a positive albeit vague memory of it, remembering it as a slow-burn friends-to-lovers story. It was only 13 episodes long.

At a whopping 40(!) episodes, The Evolution of Our Love seems painful. I watched the first episode last year and dropped it, so I decided to only watch the last six episodes (35-40).

Luckily, there were a few flashback sequences that provided the important highlights. Lu Fei (Zhang Ruo Yun) and Ruo Man (Crystal Zhang) have been best friends since high school and are now in their 30s pursuing their careers and love. Basically, you have to suffer through 40 episodes for them to get on the same page. Timmy Xu plays the second male lead, whom Ruo Man had a crush on in high school. From what I saw, his character wasn’t the worst—it’s just that he and Ruo Man weren’t right for each other. I like that this drama is about pursuing your career, navigating relationships, and understanding what you want out of your life. I just personally didn’t want to watch the long path to reaching that understanding.

Anyways, I’m definitely interested in seeing both Zhang Ruo Yun and Timmy Xu’s upcoming dramas.

Also, I was surprised to see that He Hong Shan, the female lead in Legend of the Phoenix (which I just posted about) plays a supporting role here. From the reviews/comments I read, her character is extremely annoying. (Sorry, I’m not surprised.)
